PostPosted: Wed May 14, 2003 10:14 am    Post subject: Developing an "Unglued 2" style MWS Card Set

I'm making a new Unglued set in MWS. I am encouraging anyone who is feeling creative to participate and make some funny and interesting cards.

Ground Rules: Don't make cards that are either useless or too powerful. Don't make cards that involve assaulting another player or their cards; I don't think the DCI approves.
Do make useful cards that break the rules or are funny. Make things you might play in an actual deck. I like making drastic effects that make you think how they can be usable. Things similar to the uproar that Upwelling is creating in Scourge.

Current Status of the project: 72 cards - 7 red, 9 black, 8 white, 13 blue, 6 green, 18 gold, 10 artifact, 1 land.
Type Breakdown: 1 land, 16 creatures, 55 spells
Rarity Breakdown: 22 rare, 23 uncommon, 27 common

Keep in mind that everything in this set is open for discussion. The names, colors, mechanics, costs, flavor text, rarity, everything about the cards. Think something can be better? Change it!

I've tried to give credit to cards that other people designed. Those not marked are made by me. If you made one marked "not me" then speak up so I can give credit.

You may view the exported card database here.
You may download the mwBase here.

change "skip your discard phase" ... as there is no such thing. its called a cleanup step, so perhaps say that you have no maximum hand size till end of an opponents turn

I took "discard phase" from old text on cards like Necropotence and Mine, Mine, Mine! but I will agree that "You have no maximum hand size until end of opponent's turn" conforms with current text. Changed.

Okay, fine, DON'T give me any credit for the idea.

(mumbles something akin to "bass munch," then tapes a "I is a 1337 Shadowrunz0r" to Guru's back)

Ahem.

******
Urza's Cup {3}

Artifact

(Image of a spectacularly ornate groin protector.)

Unblocked creatures attacking you lose all instances of First Strike and Double Strike.

It holds no drink, but it keeps many a whine from spilling.

******
Freedom Fry RWB

(Image of a Phyrexian Dreadnought being blown to shreds by nuclear missiles.)

Instant

Remove Freedom Fry from the game. Remove all cards from the Renaissance set from the game, then each player searches his or her library, graveyard, and hand for any card from the Renaissance set and removes each of those cards from the game.

Play this ability only if one-half or less of all players know what Renaissance is.

Gerrard blinked as mushroom clouds blocked out the sun. "The Legacy Weapon?" he asked, stupefied.
"Yes, but this is no mere Planeswalker's legacy..." Sisay said as the Dumb Seer, known only to the crew as 'Dubya,' grinned silently.

*****

Fudge Numbers XXU

Instant

Permanently alter a single instance of any number in target spell or permanent's text box, other than a cost, by adding or removing X from that number. Ignore plus or minus signs. (The number cannot be reduced below 0. Both word ('one') and numeral forms ('1') of numbers can be altered.)

"So I'll healing salve... that brings my life to 23... now I'll stream of life for 5, bringing me from 24 to 29..."

*****

Lord of the DCI RWBGU

(Image of demon standing amidst pile of burning Magic cards, lightning arcing from his eyes.)

Creature - Legend

Lord of the DCI counts as a Demon.

Lord of the DCI has power and toughness equal to the number of errata'd permanents you control.

Errata: Creature type is now Demon Legend.

More to come, if I get really bored.

Urza's Cup: If a creature is unblocked, does it matter if it has First Strike? I know it matters for Double Strike. Wouldn't "Creatures attacking you lose all instances of First Strike and Double Strike." be more to the point?

Fudge Numbers could be really interesting. What are some good victims for this? Birds of Paradise? It could make a Millstone deck really evil. I like it.

*****

How would you properly word the text on this one...

Not It! - 1WW
Instant
Change target spell's text from "All" to "All of target player's".
All players must say "Not It!" The last player to say "Not It!" becomes the target of this spell.
"My country invented 'Not It'." - Fez

Not It! - 1WW
Instant
When you play Not It!, each player must say "Not it!"
Target spell, which targets exactly one player, now targets the last player to say "Not it!"
"My country invented 'Not It.'" -Fez

That better?

Also, I was thinking... wouldn't Counterland be better as an Enchant World, to make its name more of a pun?

And, while I'm nitpicking, creature cards in your hand aren't "Creatures," and so Mighty Morphing Power Arranger needs a slight rewording. (Isn't it sad that we, as M:TG players, are trained to look for wording flaws, heh? 'Ooo boy I betcha I can hack da next Dragon Deck out of DIS motha!')

******

Yawg-Mart
Land
When Yawg-Mart comes into play, you may sacrifice any number of creatures. If you do, Yawg-Mart comes into play with X inventory counters, where X is the number of creatures sacrificed in this way.
{T}, Remove an inventory counter from Yawg-Mart: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
{T}, {2}, Sacrifice any number of creatures: Add X inventory counters to Yawg-Mart, where X is the number of creatures sacrificed in this way.
Great values, yes, but at what price?

******

(This is the single most annoying card I could imagine, and I thought it fits in well with Counterland's "make blue even more annoying" theme.)

Not So Fast! - UUUUUU
(Image of a Raging Goblin trapped in a sticky blue substance.)
Enchantment
Cumulative Upkeep: {U} and sacrifice a land.
Players cannot play Artifact, Creature, or Enchantment cards except during their own main phase, and only if the stack is empty.
All creatures lose all instances of Haste.
If a land would come into play under a player's control, except during that player's main phase and other than the first land to come into play that turn, instead it doesn't.
Whenever a spell other than an Instant would resolve, instead its controller removes it from the game, then puts X delay counters on it. As long as the card is removed from the game, remove a delay counter from it at the beginning of that player's precombat main phase. If the card has no delay counters on it, he or she puts it onto the stack as a copy of the original spell.
When Not so Fast! leaves play, its owner loses the game.
"Could Blue get any more annoying?"

******

Schoolyards of Rath - 3RB
Enchantment
At the end of each player's turn, Schoolyards of Wrath deals X damage to each player whose height (in feet) is less than the power of any creature with the greatest power, where X is the difference between that creature's power and that player's height (round down).
Somewhere, deep within the halls of his stronghold, Volrath sobbed into a crumpled InQuest. "Children can be so cruel," Greven sighed.

******

$*%@!!! - 1RR
Instant
Kicker - Kick target opponent in the shin.
$*%@!!! deals 1 damage to target opponent. If you paid the kicker cost, instead $*%@!!! deals X damage to that opponent, where X is 1 plus the number of letters in any complete word yelled by that opponent.
"Keep using those four-letter words and sooner or later God'll hit you with a lightning blast."

******

Mirrori - {2}
tcafitrA yradnegeL
.drac a ton si ti fi lleps tegrat retnuoC:{2}

******

Token Slot - {1}
Artifact
Sacrifice a token: Put a credit counter on Token Slot.
Remove a credit counter from Token Slot: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. This mana can only be used to pay the activation cost of an artifact.
"$1.25 to play Legacy Weapon? 'Bargain' my ass."[/u]

Added Not It!, Yawg-Mart, and Token Slot.
Counterland and MMPA changed. You are correct, it should be creature spells instead of creatures. Hey, we nitpick because we care. It's a game of words, and the words need to be correct.

Y.A.F.R.C
1UB
Instant
(Picture of Squee, Gerrard, Ertai, and Braids waiting in a line)
Play Y.A.F.R.C. only when a Legend card would leave play. Put that card into play on your side, but with crappier artwork and a higher cost.
"How many times do you have to die before they can't use you for a plot device anymore?"
"You mean there's a limit?"

----------------------------------------

Die, Twink!
0
Instant
(Picture of rich little kid with a soap bubble pipe)
Physically destroy all rare cards target opponent owns.
"Okay, turn one, I'll play a Mox Emerald, Mox Ruby, Black Lotus, sacrifice the Lotus to play Ancestral Recall and Time Walk, then, wait, what are you doing? Stop! NOOOOO!"

----------------------------------------

Counter THIS!
0
Instant
(Picture of one player pointing a bazooka across the table at opponent)
When you play Counter THIS!, pay one mana of any color. If the color of mana payed was blue, you lose the game. Jerkoff.
Play Counter THIS! only if target opponent has prevented or redirected the last three spells you have played.
Counter THIS! cannot be prevented or redirected.
For the rest of the game, target opponent cannot play blue spells or effects except on his or her turn.

PostPosted: Mon May 19, 2003 7:52 am    Post subject: More ideas

Willy the Weenie Gamer - 1WW
Creature - Legend
2: Search your library for a creature card with converted mana cost 3 or less and put it into your hand. Shuffle your library afterwards.
"Find that Leviathan yet, Timmy?"

Just... Stop - 3GG
Enchantment
When you have 50 or more mana in your mana pool, you win the game.
"I just don't think green has enough mana acceleration yet. Sometimes my opponent still gets a turn."

Also... can we re-add Not So Fast! in a streamlined-yet-still-obnoxious form, like...

Not So Fast! - UUUUU
Enchantment
At the beginning of your upkeep, pay UU or sacrifice Not So Fast!
Skip your untap phase.
Whenever a non-instant card on the stack would resolve, instead its controller removes it from the game and places a delay counter on it. At the beginning of each player's precombat main phase, he or she removes a delay counter from each spell removed from the game in this way. When any such spell has no more delay counters, place it into its owner's graveyard and place a copy of it on the stack with the same targets as the original. (If none of a spell's targets are legal, it is countered.)
Mark Rosewater took his final revenge on Dominaria...

Keep in mind that one of the running gags in Unglued was absurdly complex cards... remember Spark Fiend?

Also... shouldn't there be a creature theme? In UG, the theme was chickens... should we expand on that?

Chicken Fingers - WR
Enchant Creature
Enchanted creature gets +1/+0, gains First Strike, and counts as a Chicken in addition to its other creature types.

Yawgmoth's Biggest Fan - BBB
Creature - Fanboy
0/1
Whenever a card with the word "Yawgmoth" or "Phyrexia" comes into play, sacrifice Yawgmoth's Biggest Fan and search your library for a card with the word "Yawgmoth" or "Phyrexia" in its name. Put that card into your hand and shuffle your library.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if Yawgmoth's Biggest Fan is in your graveyard, pay either 2B or 2 life and return Yawgmoth's Biggest Fan to your hand.
"Could you do that thing where you rain oil again? That was so cool. And that thing where you made Gerrard kill Urza? That was awesome. And, Mister Yawgmoth, mister Yawgmoth... Mister Yawgmoth?"

Serra Sycophants - WWW
Creature - Fanboys
0/1
Whenever a card with the word "Serra" in its name is played, search your library for a card with "Serra" in its name and reveal it. Shuffle your library and put it on top. If you cannot, sacrifice Serra's Sychophants and put the top three cards of your library into your graveyard.
If Serra's Sycophants would be put into a graveyard from play, instead remove them from the game and return them to play at end of turn.
"Dear... Serra. Although I'm sorry... to hear about Feroz... I'd like to remind you that you are now single... and that I own every one of your permanents..."

Filthy Wiccan Hippies... of Gaea - GGG
Creature - Fanboys
0/1
Whenever a card with the word "Gaea" in its name is played, search your library for a card with the word "Gaea" in its name. If it's a Land card, put it into play and shuffle your library afterwards. If it's a Creature card, reveal it and place it into your hand, then shuffle your library. Otherwise, shuffle your library and put your card on top of it. If you cannot, sacrifice Filthy Wiccan Hippies... of Gaea and put a +1/+1 counter on each creature each of your opponents controls.
If Filthy Wiccan Hippies... of Gaea would be put into a graveyard from play, instead return it to your hand and sacrifice a land.

The Maraxuses of Keld - RRR
(Picture of a pasty garage rock band in Maraxus of Keld suits.)
Creature - Fanboys
0/1
Haste.
Whenever a card with the world "Keld" on it is played, search your library for a card with the word "Keld" in its name and reveal it. If you cannot, choose an opponent; that opponent gains control of The Maraxuses of Keld. Flip a coin; if you win, put the card into your hand and place a +1/+1 counter on The Maraxuses of Keld. If you lose, repeat the process using a card with a different name than any other card revealed in this way this turn. Shuffle your library afterwards.
"Our new album, 'Starke Contrast,' is gonna be huuuuge."

Try this on for size...

Split card:
Thievery U/Thievery U
Instant/Instant
Put a random card from your opponent's hand in your hand.//Put a random card from your opponent's hand in your hand.
Yoink!//Yoink!

Also:

Trekkie Elf 3G
(An elf, with Spock-like ears, doing that fingers thing, I have this pic, I just need to find it...)
GG, T: Choose a creature card you own from outside the game and put it into play.
Beam me up, Scotty!
1/1

This will need to be better costed, or try to encourage killing him off, in an ironic way, of course, but I'm just brainstorming here.[/i]

Quick post before I go to work.

Sporkpimp: Chickens were the most common, but don't forget that Unglued has cows, sheep, and clamfolk too.

I'm going to add stuff from you two (sporkpimp and patsen) when I get back, but before I go to work, here's an idea I'm throwing out for consideration.

Timmy's Delight - XG
Sorcery
Choose one: Place one X/X green bloated creature token into play, or place X 1/1 green weenie creature tokens into play.
"Eragh, TIMMAH!" - Timmy

Now what would you guys make for Johnny's Delight and Spike's Delight?
Remember the archetypes - Timmy likes the big win, Johnny likes the creative combo-based win, Spike wants to win no matter what.

Personally, I am a Johnny. Can't wait to use Pemmin's Aura.

Not So Fast!'s current wording places all non-instant spells into a repeating stasis loop as long as Not So Fast! is in play. Is this what you intended?

Spike Fiend just had you play Craps to determine whether or not it stayed in play.

Just Stop is tempting, but I think it's too easy to get infinite mana. Maybe something more like this?

Throw Mana From The Train - 50G
Enchantment
50: Place a sink counter on Throw Mana From The Train. Play this ability only once per turn and only during your turn.
5: Remove a sink counter from Throw Mana From The Train. Any player may play this ability.
If Throw Mana From The Train has three sink counters on it, you win the game.

Added a bunch of cards, including the other two delights. Let me know what you think of em.

Not So Fast! does NOT generate an infinite loop. I chose the wording VERY carefully. It only removes non-instant CARDS from the game and puts delay counters on them. When it puts a copy on the stack, that's not a card, and hence Not So Fast!'s ability doesn't affect it.

Throw Mana From the Train is entertaining, esp. in a multiplayer game, heh.

Issue with Spork: Storm triggers when a spell is played, not cast. So, Spork would have to do the copying itself (How about "Place a copy of target spell on the stack. It's controller may choose new targets. Storm." to increase the general wackiness?), so maybe just "Put a copy of target spell on the stack for every spell that was played before it this turn. Its controller may choose new targets for each copy."

And, running off of that idea:
Spoon - 3UU
Instant
You may choose new targets for target spell and any spell on the stack with the same name as that spell. (All targets must be legal.)
He dug the spoon, but he scooped anyway.

Knife - 2W
Sorcery
Destroy target creature and all creatures with the same name as it. Those creatures cannot be regenerated. Each player gains X life, where X is the total power of the creatures destroyed in this way divided by the number of players.
There's enough for EVERYBODY.

And, you're right... I forgot about the cows and clamfolk.
